Hawaii's Big Island Tiki and Bamboo Sales and Service, Hank Yake
Bamboo, the most notorious members of the grass family, is one of the fastest growing organisms in the world and it can also withstand harsh climates. Bamboo has been recorded growing over 3-feet in one day! The largest species of bamboo can grow as tall as 98-feet, with a diameter as big as 8" and can reach their maximum height in as quick as only 3-months. Just like grass, when bamboo is cut down it is able to re-grow on its own. Needless to say, there is a lot of bamboo out there and is a great resource to use it to make bamboo viscose fibre for items such as towels, sheets and bathrobes. Another interesting fact is that bamboo requires significantly less water than cotton crops; which is also one of the many reasons why viscose made from bamboo is considered an Eco-Friendly/Green product. In addition to not wasting water, bamboo has natural properties to deter insects, therefore it also does not need to be treated with pesticides or insecticides, whereas cotton typically does. Cotton is actually considered to be a "dirty" crop because of the significant amounts of insecticides and pesticides used on cotton. It is said that approximately 1/4 of the world's insecticides and 1/10 of the world's pesticides are used on cotton crops. Bamboo Fibre is considered to be biodegradable, as it is derived from a plants cellulose. Man made fibres like polyester are not considered to be biodegradable, therefore, when disposed, they fill up much more space in our landfills and remain there for a very long time. Take pride in your choice to use products derived from bamboo and in return these same products will provide you with various benefits which bamboo has to offer. Even the Wall Street Journal has recognized towels and sheets woven from bamboo fibers as being a contribution of keeping your home as "green" as possible.
